Before us stand the men of the Phoenix. They perform a strange kata before the first lethal volley of arrows rip into the Crane at impossible ranges. Men I thought where easy targets before, being without armour, turn to stone as they finish their kata. I have never before witnessed the magics of the Phoenix... But by what I see now, this is only a taste.

Thorns sprung up out of the ground grabbing at the feet of the Crane Cavalry. The peaceful Asahina Shugenja gathered together and began chanting... The Daidoji moved at the speed of horses, while arrows seemed to bounce off the Crane cavalry like little twigs...

The Phoenix began to back off. They where quickly losing their already tenuous defensive position.

HtH combat: Earth dragon plays the tactical card strength of purity. It hits 4 times for 214 damage, Slaughtering everyone and leaving an extra large foot print. The Dragon of Earth swung around the flank of the army and began to rend at the horrified firestorm. I am afraid I could not see much of the carnage, aside from bodies being flung to and fro....

Isawa Tomo casts Ebb and flow of battle on her own unit and spends Isawa Tomo. Earth Dragon casts essence of earth on the Daidoji. Isawa Tadaka uses his ability to give the Tsunami legion +1TN. Asahina Tomo2 casts essence of earth on the Kenshinzen.
Tsunami Legion charges charge the Doji house guard. Defensive position is played. Ranged Attacks: Isawa Tomo's Hurricane initiates on Doji's fan. Turtle shell is played. 1 hit for 6 damage. No casualties. HtH Combat: Tsunami Legion hits the Doji house guard 6 times for 32 damage, wounding one and killing another Doji. The Doji hits back 3 times for 37 damage killing 3 of the Tsunami Legion. The Crane gain 2 Honour for having the Imperial standard. A magical wave rippled towards the Doji house guard, with Yari armed Phoenix leaping out of the water at the Crane. The earth dragon roared with glee as it approached the archers of the Phoenix, they understandably fell back...

Asahina Tomo2 casts windbourne speed on the Daidoji. Kakita Toshimoko challenges Isawa Tsuke to a duel. Another time is played. Primary Movement: Earth Dragon engages Uona's Hurricane initiates in the flank Ranged Attacks: Isawa Tomo's Hurricane initiates fire at Doji's fan hitting 2 times for 14 damage. Killing 1 Doji. Isawa Tsuke's firestorm fire at the Kenshinzen. Resist magic is played. Isawa Tsuke then casts the fires that cleanse at the kenshinzen scoring 16 hits for 109 damage. Vaporizing 10 Kenshinzen. Crane plays the tactical card grim determination.
HtH Combat: The Crane play Iajutsu duel, initiating a duel between Isawa Tadaka and Doji Kuwanen. Isawa Tadaka plays the tactical card focus and causes 2 wounds. Kuwanen rolls and scores 3 wounds, both take damage. The Doji house guard hit the Tsunami legion 4 times for 26 damage, killing 2 Phoenix. The Phoenix strike back hitting 6 times for 59 damage. 2 Doji house guard die, one is wounded. The Earth dragon hits the Hurricane initiates 2 times for 65 damage, killing 6 phoenix archers. Grim determination is played. Phoenix VP: 6 ENDGAME Crane VP: 7 The Phoenix line begins to collapse. The only real resistance I can see is by the infamous Tsunami Legion, the rest are near to routing. The dragon plunges into the Phoenix archers, tossing them around like childrens toys. Then in the midst of the Kenshinzen, a blinding light, flash and then thunderous sound came forth, and in the instant, only a few Kenshinzen where left. I got on my steed after that, and went straight to my scrolls, to document the fierceness of the Phoenix Clans spells.
AAR 20MAR99 1430 - 2000 This was the first battle we have ever used using the Phoenix. There was no restrictions on this game as in my previous games. We also where using the honour rules, which was interesting, but not really vital. This battle was a ranged attack and special orders nightmare. No suprise, but spells where flying everywhere. The most impressive being Isawa Tsuke casting "the fires that cleanse" rolling 24 attack dice.... quite similar to having a portable nuclear weapon. The Phoenix player also noted that, even though it was great that their shugenja could lead units, it was still advantageous to have a few skirmishing kind. This was the biggest battle we have fought, and it took a long time just to get to turn 7. We havent as of yet, had a turn limit, we just play till its obvious who won, concession, or the store closes. In this case the store closed. The one other point I would like to note is that this is the first time a dragon hasnt been killed during the battle, and it did great! That is my humble opinion.
